A Job Rescheduling Model Considering Cutting Tool Failure and Cutting Tool Life for a Flexible Manufacturing System

This paper deals with a job rescheduling problem for an FMS considering the unavailability of cutting tools as they are broken, during unmanned operation. The FMS consists of several parallel identical CNC machines integrated to a material handling system. The CNC machines have thesame number and types of cutting tools on each tool magazine. The jobs to be processed are parts having two surfaces. Finishing a setup, eachofsequentialoperationsrequires a specific cutting tool type. In the initial job scheduling, the assignment of the operation to each machine is based on the life of the cutting tools. During operations, the cutting tool could be broken before the life time limit is reached. If the cutting tool is broken then the operation will stop. In this situation, the FMS checks the status of the operations and the cutting tools. To continue the FMS operation, the stopped and the waiting operations will be rescheduled to the machine or another machine, considering the remaining life of cutting tools. The objective of the rescheduling model is to minimize the difference of starting time of the initial and new schedules and to minimize makespan.
